Liv & Lov by Dora Szekely designs     StudioDDB Stained Glass Art

Dora Szekely of Liv & Lov creates pieces of wearable art jewelry, designing each piece completely by hand! As a Global Studies major in college focusing on Fair Trade and having worked with FT organizations, Dora makes great efforts to use only recycled silver. She switched to recycled with the dream of one day being a part of creating a Fair Trade Silver, something with transparency for artisans that can’t afford to own a mine.

Dora even had the opportunity to visit mines in southern Africa and learn how it has developed the country and affects the people, further strengthening her resolve. She has also interned and worked as a researcher for the No Dirty Gold campaign and hopes to work on Fair Trade gold in Colombia before going to Peru to research silver mining. The profits she makes from her jewelry not only go back into her art but towards these goals!

The manner in which I create is inspired by people and the earth, the designs are inspired by nature, geometric forms, and connections. The way opposing geometric forms connect and the connections everything living has to each other, unknown, random, and destined.

& You will not only find happiness

But will change the World!

Check out Liv & Lov by Dora Szekely designs and come out to the East Greenwich Art Festival on September 1st and 2nd at the New England Tech campus to see Dora’s beautiful artwork in person!

For Donna, her work in stained glass comes from her fascination with the play of light and shadow – a constant change of the piece of art at different times during the day (and during the four seasons) as the light changes the appearance of the image

Donna is inspired by the beauty of cathedral windows and greatly appreciates the amount of time and hard work that goes into creating such works of art. Donna works mainly in the Tiffany copper
foil technique and believes Tiffany’s works are breathtaking

While Donna has worked in illustration, painting, photography and more, she enjoys the challenges of cutting and soldering glass to create a piece of art. While she is able to produce a traditional stained glass piece, She finds that it’s always more fun to create something with a bit of whimsey

Visit Donna of StudioDDB Stained Glass Art online today and make sure to come out to the East Greenwich Art Festival to see works by Donna, Dora and all of your favorite local artists along with live entertainment, local eats, free kids activities and more!

And just around the corner…

Transitions Jewelry Designs     Rocklen Designs

Kathleen Barris, creator of Transitions Jewelry Designs, designs and creates one of a kind jewelry with the intention of providing people with a “go to piece” or a frequently worn “statement piece” rather than one you save in a box for a special occasion.

Of her many inspirations, Kathleen is especially drawn to natural stones with unusual shapes or an interesting story. By pairing these with classic materials and techniques she is able to create original designs with a contemporary edge.  Kathleen’s love for the rich yet subtle textures and patterns often seen in nature is extremely evident in her artwork. Most importantly, Kathleen is inspired by her grandchildren and claims “there is nothing as inspiring as seeing the world through their eyes!”

Kathleen is currently working on very sculptural pieces, including spiculum and Mobius – forms from the distant past – to which she gives a contemporary twist.

Recently, she and her husband (also business partner), started learning Lapidary. They have even begun to set up their own Lapidary studio in order to cut their own stones, allowing for great flexibility in the design process. Look out for these pieces to begin to making appearances in upcoming shows!

Melissa Rocklen of Rocklen Designs creates jewelry and mobiles using metal, glass, stone, and paper clay entirely by hand – meaning she does all the forming, hammering, wire-wrapping, sculpting, sanding, and finishing.   Her jewelry is sterling silver, with copper and bead accents. Her mobiles are made using steel, copper, paper clay and glass and incorporate her handmade birds which she sculpts and sands individually, giving each one a unique personality.

Melissa’s inspiration has changed over time.  While her jewelry making began after returning home from studying mask-making in Mexico, Ghana, Mali, and Indonesia where the images in her head were inspired by the shapes and designs she had seen in her travels, she is now most inspired by seeing people smile.

The creation of Melissa’s Birds & Beads Mobiles began in the middle of an extra-long winter, when the cold darkness was making people a bit more tired and sad.  The birds, with their movement and whimsy, seemed to cheer people up.  Since then, she has been working on making jewelry and mobiles that have a playful effect.

Melissa began making art when she was very young – drawing inspiration from her mother who was a print maker. As she grew older, she also focused on drawing, painting, and printmaking.  It was only after studying mask-making in other countries and seeing how people used and wore art in their everyday lives that she realized she wanted to make functional art.

“I love seeing people wear and enjoy the things I make.  Making art provides balance for me.”

You will find both Kathleen and Melissa at the East Greenwich Art Festival on September 1st and 2nd at the new New England Tech Campus! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to support your local artists and enjoy a fun-filled day of art, entertainment and merriment!

And don’t forget to put the Festival Fete Holiday Market on your calendar for December 1st and 2nd at the Garden City Center! It will be here before you know it!

East Greenwich Art Festival Coming Soon!

22 Jul

Hey Festival Go-ers! We are excited to announce that the East Greenwich Art Festival will be here before you know it and we want to share some of our lovely featured local artists…

A Dog’s Life Bakery will be there…

At It’s a Dog’s Life Bakery, they make all natural, gluten and preservative-free dog treats that people feel good about giving their dogs.  They also make stylish handmade collars and leashes, perfect for our furry friends in sizes from chihuahas to St. Bernards…

The main inspiration behind their work is Kristin Paradis’ 170 lb.St. Bernard, Otis, a frustrated fashionista, who had nothing cute to wear!  He also suffers from various allergies, so after much research, and many delicious trials and errors, It’s a Dog’s Life Bakery was born.

A Dog’s Life Bakery prides themselves on having the  happiest, most enthusiastic customers, who make them smile every time they stop by the booth! “Oh, and their humans are very nice too!”

Nancy Rafi will also be there…

Collage and art journaling professional, Nancy creates handbound blank art journals filled with 140# paper with fun designs and sayings on them.  The journals are unique because there are so few blank journals with this great paper, which can stand up to watercolor, acrylic, glue, collage and never bend or buckle.

Her inspiration for creating journals is the love she has for art journaling herself.  She spends at least 30 minutes every day working in her journal…and usually a lot longer!

This summer, Nancy has become involved with an international group call Art Abandonment (created by Michael and Andrea deMeng) that invites artists around the world to create art and then leave it somewhere where others can find it and take it home.  There are more than 5000 people involved in the project!  Nancy has created a giving tree in Wickford with a few dozen pieces hanging from the branches, and received three emails from people who found them and took them home.  She thinks it’s a great way to celebrate art and share it with the world and so do we!

These are only a couple of our wonderful participating artists and vendors that will be at the East Greenwich Art Festival on September 1st and 2nd at the New NE Tech Campus!

Stay tuned all week for more fun features about our artists and festivals!
