The Lilac Wind Art Glass

Mimi Huszer Fagnant is a lampwork artist fromRhode Islandwhere she has her own studio, The Lilac Wind.  She makes her beads using a propane and oxygen, mixed fuel, torch to melt glass rods of many colors.  This process is known as lampworking and has been around for thousands of years. Becoming a great beadmaker is similar to becoming a great violinist.  It is no accident!  Mimi has had many great teachers, but it is the practice that counts. Practice, practice and more practice.

Once her beads are designed, created and formed using no molds, they are then, all annealed in a computer controlled kiln, for strength and durability. When the beads have cooled, she continues working, designing and making jewelry. Some of these glass treasures become useful items such as key chains, magnifiers, badge holders and utensils. Many lampwork glass pieces are turned into Christmas ornaments, buttons, marbles, mobiles, and barrettes. Of course, her favorite sales are just beads, where the customers can do as they wish.  All Mimi wants to do is make the beads!! Recently, she has added a few Do It Yourself Kits in which incorporate her lampwork beads. So far, there are Cha Cha  bracelet kits, Viking Knit Bracelet kits and a Square Finger Braid Bracelet kits in this category.

This year, 2011, one of Mimi’s beads was chosen by the International Society of Glass Beadmakers to be in a traveling exhibit of notable beads, called Surface.  This is the second time she has received this recognition. The first was a traveling show, Perspectives, in which her bead ended the world tour in Japan.

Mimi’s product line is ever changing and evolving as she continues to experiment and grow as a beadmaker.  Check out her work and ask any questions about the process, maybe you, too, will become fascinated by bead making!!
