Paula McDonough, The Venerable Bead: Melting the Competition

19 Apr

Paula McDonough, creator and designer behind The Venerable Bead, is raising the bar for handmade jewelry. Although her roles as wife, mother of two and a clinical social worker take plenty of time out of her day, Paula spends her nights creating beautiful wearable art.

Paula’s unique jewelry making process of melting glass rods in the flame of a torch also incorporates metalwork and enameling. For her, “there is nothing more relaxing at the end of the day than to create”

As a Seekonk, Massachusetts native and a local Rhode Islander, Paula McDonough feels right at home in the city of Cranston, Rhode Island and is SUPER excited to be participating in the Garden City Center Art Festival on June 11, 2011!

According to Paula, The mission of The Venerable Bead’s beautiful glass and mixed metal jewelry is to tell a story, and that she does. She loves being able to bring to life the stories of her customers, incorporating updated vintage watch parts and skeleton keys to accompany her glass beads and pendants when fitting.

In order to personalize her pieces of jewelry to fit the wearer’s story at the utmost level, Paula often hand stamps brass and copper tags with names, dates, poems, and expressions. She also etches meaningful images into the metal

For newer artisans, Paula suggests listening to the people who will be using your product because they have some of the most creative ideas and they will tell you what works and what doesn’t work for them.

“If you can marry your artistic vision with what real people want and need, you will be successful.”

“Take inspiration from the world around you, ask questions, network, buy the best materials and equipment you can afford and then take all that with you to your studio and create original work.”-Paula McDonough
