Artwork with Intention by Janice Kissinger

8 Apr

“Life is filled with suffering, but it is also filled with many wonders, like the blue sky, the sunshine, the eyes of a baby. To suffer is not enough. We must also be in touch with the wonders of life. They are within us and all around us, everywhere, any time.”-Thich Nhat Hanh

As a student of Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, Janice Kissinger gathers her inspiration through his teachings and puts forth these efforts into her company, Felt Sutra, an extension of this practice in mindfulness and feeling joyful.

Janice Kissinger launched Felt Sutra after twenty years as an executive in the nonprofit arts and culture industry.  Her studio lies inside her 1765 home on the Mosshasuck River in Northern Rhode Island, allowing her maximum time in the studio and full availability for her three children. Janice has a degree in art history and has studied with some of the best feltmakers in the country.

More than half of her sales are custom pieces and she loves the process of working with the personality and sensibility of the wearer and creating these pieces with deliberate positive intention.

Favorite materials include wool, silk, vintage beads, glass and things like acorn caps. Janice loves the feltmaking process because it really connects her with the material – it is just wool, soap and water and the artist – more like sculpture than other forms of textile art.  She designs items for babies, wearable art, cushy slippers, home décor items and objects to make life more fun.

Tips for aspiring artists?  If you love what you make, someone else will, too. Don’t be afraid to knock on the doors of the superstars in your field – they are usually delighted to share their experience and many teach classes and workshops.

Try this on for size, a special recipe by Janice:

Raw sugar, olive oil and a few drops of sandalwood or rose oil makes a fabulous body scrub that takes away all winter’s dryness and leaves your skin super soft. Great, cheap treat to get through winter and early spring.

You will find Janice set up with her wonderfully made felt products at the Garden City Center Art Festival on June 11, 2011!

You can also find her work in her etsy shop at www.feltsutra.etsy.com and learn more about her at www.feltsutra.com
