Happy Winter!

21 Dec

Today is the shortest day of the year and the true kick-off of winter. Apparently, it is not the end of the world as some speculated, but surely the beginning of something new.

A few years ago, I clipped an article to save in my Christmas binder about making the holidays a season for delight, not stress. The article includes a conversation with the cookbook author and recently named “Britain’s Most Sexy Over Fifty Female“, Nigella Lawson. In the article, I think she makes a wonderful point about celebrating the season (Winter, that is) and finding joy and peacefulness in a chilly time of year. Gathering around a fireplace, lighting candles, and even enjoying the dimness of light… is warming in it’s own way. Nigella says,

We think paradise on Earth is some tropical island, when actually we’re much better off reveling in the blanket of darkness that we can make cozy with lights. Christmas is really about bringing light and fire and warmth into the chill of darkness. I feel the Christmas rituals of the home are, if not based around faith, essentially an act of good faith.

So light up one of Lux Aromatica‘s naturally scented candles, and enjoy the flicker of the flame until Spring. Some cultures celebrate the Winter Solstice with grand festivals and rituals so this seems a perfect day for us to thank you all for your continued support of Festival Fete throughout the year. We wish you the happiest of holidays surrounded by the warmth and comfort of light, family and friends, and a very Happy New Year!

Even though it’s still dark early, I love knowing that the days will keep getting longer from here on out – at least until the summer solstice!
